NOTE: 1997 UPDATE. CAMP KAPPE IS
EXTENDING THE TRADITION, THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE A 2ND ANNUAL WORK
WEEK AND AGAIN WE ARE GOING TO PROVIDE SPONSORSHIP FOR ONE FULL STUDENT AND 1/2
OF ANOTHER.
The Knights of Columbus and the
Harry & Isabel Cameron Foundation provided funding for the first Work Week
at Camp Kappe. Work Week 1996 is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Galveston-Houston through the School of Environmental Education. This program
is being offered:
1 - to teach good work habits
2 - to give students who wouldn't
be able to attend a summer camp that opportunity
3 - to give students a chance to
earn needed spending money.
This program was open to Jr. High
Students and each of the students wishing to attend must have had good conduct
grades, submitted a one page letter on why they should be sponsored and also be
okayed by their school principle.
Our Council provided sponsorship
for 1½ students and we received a thank you letter to that effect from Sr.
Thomas Ann. We also received a thank you from the students who benefited and it
is listed as follows (the letter was hand written so I did the best I could at
deciphering some of the spelling/English):
Dear Knights of Columbus
I really want to thank you for
sponsoring me for the work week at Camp Kappe. I have limited exposure to the
outdoors being a teen from the inner city. I don't have the opportunity to meet
and be with other children of different social and economic backgrounds. My
group tore down the garden fence. We learned how to nail, use the post hole
digger, and tap in the posts. When we were not working, we fished, went
swimming, played games and had fun. I really appreciate and thank you for
helping me and my group. I have learned more about the real world.
Sincerely
